Any suggestions for a new TV show to watch?

The wife and I like to slowly work our way through TV box sets and we've just finished one so we're looking for something new - am after some suggestions!

Ideally something with quite a few seasons and it has to have a continuous story line! We particularly like cop dramas

So far we've done:

Sopranos
The Shield
Dexter
Burn Notice
Prison Break (got kind of boring towards the end)
24 (get reeeeally predictable and same'y after about season 4)
Lost (wish I'd never bothered watching the last season)

Neither of us like political shows (west wing = super dull) or anything to do with war (eg: band of boring). I suggested spooks and we watched a few episodes but the wife said it wasn't fast enough action for her - she has the attention span of a puppy!

Any suggestions?!

Based on your list I would suggest Breaking Bad I have heard good things about the wire also but I have never watched it myself, Breaking Bad I would definitely recommend though

Breaking Bad took me a while to get into, but gets better as the seasons progress. I have seen only through what is available on NetFlix, which is through Season 3.

IMO, the best cop drama currently on TV is Southland.

You NEED to watch it until the end, the season finale is something very special, you can stream or download them all easily (disclaimer not encouraging stealing :P)

Something out of your range - True Blood. Guarantee the wife will love it.
It has a story line and there is a hell of a lot of sex.

The Wire is the best cop drama IMO, but I would go for breaking bad for pure entertainment value, it's a fantastic and gripping series.

We actually ended up watching the first two episodes of breaking bad this evening - seems like it could be good. Also I've been hearing about the wire from a lot of people - which is probably a good sign.

Never seen southland - might have to check it out.

@Renee - twilight has ruined all vampire shows, lol.

That's a shame because True Blood is not about glitter vampires. It's about the proper ones that can't go in the sun, that can't wake during the day, that cry blood and who screw at every opportunity. It's awesome.

/agree with the Wire & Breaking Bad, both incredibly well polished TV series

Another show you might like with the missus, bit more on the fantasy side, but compelling nonetheless, is 'Game of Thrones'

Again it's a bit slow at the beginning, but after a few episodes the characters take shape & the plot becomes pretty exciting.

Prison Break season 1 was good, but then 1/2 way into season 2 I realised that EVERY episode would have this SUPER DRAMATIC ending and that became very annoying. Gave it up after end of season 2.

The Wire is the best cop drama IMO.

I'd vote for NYPD Blue as the all-time best cop drama. The Wire is certainly top 5.

It's about 10 years old, but if you haven't seen it, check out Six Feet Under, i've watched about 1/2 of the shows since summer and it's quite entertainment. I never figured i'd like it when i heard it was about undertakers, but it's great.

You've got some fantastic HBO series in there. Few of my favs.

From top to bottom..
I'd watch
Deadwood (3 seasons) - the bad guy here Swearegen makes Vic Macky look like a pussy cat - my fav show of all time.
The Wire (5 seasons?) - your wife wont like it.. attention span
The Corner (6 episodes of pure awesomeness) - your wife wont like it.. attention span
Battlestar Galactica (7-8 seasons the new version) - its sci fi, but if you aren't a fan of sci fi, you'll enjoy it just as much. - your wife will love.
Breaking Bad you will really enjoy
True blood started of great and turned into pure shite in the 3rd season, I requested my life back.

I agree with Breaking band. It's very good.

I'd also recommend "Lie to me" and "Bones", i've just started watching "numb3rs" as well. Im a complete geek and love programs with real facts, if your like me, you'll love.

I am faithful to CSI Las Vegas, especially the old episodes before Grissom left. I can watch the episodes over and over. I am also fun of and old TV program that I found interesting 'Medium', especially the episodes where Angelica Huston was a guest (seasons 4 and 5).

I will look for Bones, let you know if I like it.

Some more good suggestions - thanks! I've found shows like CSI, Bones etc.. better for just dipping in and out rather than watching the series through from start to finish.

@Rak - I read the wife your list and she said "nothing from the past, future or fantasy". Lol, she's a picky one

[Edit: although I might be able to get her to watch deadwood because that clip you sent me had burt from raising hope in it!]

So shortlisted we have breaking bad, the wire and southland to check out.
