Babies are not affected at all. Maybe the panic because you do not want to bury your parents prematurely? Or because when you want to buy something, you can not, because others are trying to get it, so you are trying to buy it as well. The ontological security was just broken, man. People are playing roles of consumers for whole their lives, they identify with consuming and now suddenly they can not consume. So it is causing a panic. It is just natural. I do understand the people that have panic, I do not understand how people who are consumers as well and work in marketing on the top do not understand it.

I'm not surprised by people panicking, I find it amusing that the lady in front of me in a supermarket was buying 10x12 toilet paper rolls, perhaps she was expecting some serious diarrhea (by the way is not even a coronavirus symptom)... However, large part of today's civilization is more vulnerable than you imagine. There is a nice quote related to it - "There are only nine meals between mankind and anarchy"

i'm honestly very disappointed by United States' - and especially Trump's - reaction to it. He is technically the most powerful man in the world, what does he do?

- first some messages on Twitter on how "it is less serious than common flu" and that people are overreacting (tell that to doctors in Italy...)

- then great timing happens with the Saudi/Russia argument which leads to insane oil crash, which can damage the world's economy, US shale miners and cause instability in the world. His response is a tweet saying how this is great news, a "tax relief" and Americans will have cheaper petrol

- then probably some advisor informs him about the situation in Italy and about Schengen zone. The response is a flight ban from 26 Schengen countries (incl. countries like Latvia or Lithuania with 1 to 3 confirmed cases) to USA - while still not affecting flights from United Kingdom, Ireland, countries such as Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and maybe more importantly East and Southeast Asia.
Of course this selective ban makes no sense, what would make sense is quick large-scale testing and perhaps addressing the fact that 30 million Americans have no health insurance.

I think if I created an AI and gave it a goal to make each decision so that the economy becomes more and more screwed up, Donald Trump would be the result. I can survive that US stocks dropped 20-40 %, international stocks dropped 20-40 %, even stupid Bitcoin dropped 25 % in a day; I just hope I'm not already covertly infected, I'd likely survive it but I may infect a random old guy I meet on the street, that is something to think about...

By the way the image on previous page is fitting, it would be very funny if it turns out that Trump met with some "Make Brazil Great Again" guy, then he bans flights to/from Europe and then he learns that the Brazilian guy he had lunch with tested positive for coronavirus (he's 73 by the way so in the most vulnerable group).

If your not a baby/toddler, elderly, or someone in a high risk group, EG: depleted immune system, then according to reports, if you get it, your only likely to get a mild case. So why the panic?

This is very selfish, I think people in the most affected countries (Italy, Iran...) used the same logic and the result is sad, just read what I wrote above.

But since China is helping already to other countries... I guess there is a way to stop it. As BJ said, it was necessary in democracies to wait longer, until we spoiled brats are able to accept this nuisance. People will survive, maybe some will die, maybe relatively lot, but my fear is that after that nothing happens, just more liberal monetary policy. The problem is not the virus, but the state of humanity, where nobody aims anywhere and all that people have is fear and guilt that emerged right now.

Spot on. This is not "if". Donald and many other things, incl. corona or rather the reaction to it, is a result of some invisible need for the restart of economy and society. It can be felt. The economy as we see it is already screwed up for long time and from 2009 it is just pure lunacy. The only problem is that it is not seen and it is not felt, so we tend to think everything is ok. Nothing is ok, What we see is a result of billions of people who lost their path, who are just live/live "well"/survive to pay their bills. I am sure even cats are much more aware why they live here than average people. Corona and will probably vanish and will be just a warning for some. After all it will probably help to the economy, because dead old unproductive people are great for capitalism, right?

Im in Madrid which is going into lockdown,, a few more days and I think it will be locked down even further, Spain has a large elderly population and noway would the health service be able to cope here. Though i think I would pass the sickness im aware that many around me may not like those with exisitng conditions, one is my childs mother who is in chemotherapy .. so im staying at home more than usual for the next 10 days.

Very poor and shocking response from the UK, they have decided to only test those for covid-19 who are admitted to hospital with symptoms. All this is going to do is hide the true figures and spread of the virus and put a lot more lifes at risk. You can't rely on computer simulations and models to predict the spread like they will now be doing.

That's true but that won't change. Not due to corona, black plague or meteor hitting the earth.

For me it just sounds insane what's going on. I didn't buy food or any other precaution. Just watching the stock market and waiting.

I might be completely wrong, but my guess is that the damage that this total panic will do will be much greater than of corona itself.

Just checked our our Gov., site: Across the world, there have been more than 124,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) and more than 4,500 reported deaths. (so approx 3.65% fatality rate).

124,000 confirmed cases probably puts the real number of cases in the millions. Death rate same as influenza.

The realist in me says "maybe take the annual influenza more seriously every year, look after yourself. Eat better, drink better, take vitamins and take care of personal hygene" just simple common sense

The death rate is under-reported as well. Don't be so sure. I just learned today from a local doctor of cases in my city that are not publicly disclosed. In America that could be true I guess - but most health professionals would probably share the truth.
Most developed nations have a health service that isn't profit driven - so I dont think hospitals are hiding numbers worldwide.

Ok, right now I am in a country that has closed borders. I can not leave to the country where I live (also that country is over the ocean and there are no flights). Also there is an order to stay at home. I have no home, I stay in hotel. But there is a ban on hotels or property rentals.

And this is just a beginning...
