Paul the Octopus dies

A sad day indeed...

Paul the Octopus, the tentacled tipster who fascinated soccer fans by predicting results at the World Cup, died Tuesday.

Paul had reached the octopus old age of 2 1/2 years and died in his tank on Tuesday morning at the Sea Life aquarium in the western German city of Oberhausen, spokeswoman Ariane Vieregge said.

Good bloody riddance, that damn octopus cost me a small fortune.

Seriously though, he was certainly an amusing sideshow to the World Cup and not many Octopus's die famous.

He even turned down a lucrative transfer to Madrid after his success at the World Cup. Paul the Octopus may have been the last true "One Aquarium" Octopus of the modern game.

He cost us bookies a small fortune but I did manage to make a few squid of him.

Our writer picked up on this story yesterday. I was facinated to learn that there was a film made during the world cup about Paul. The Guardian described Paul as a celluloid cephalopod.

What's even more insane is that the maker of the film claimed Paul died during the World Cup tournament and was replaced by an imposter. Somehow the imposter got lucky. Got to love a good conspiracy theory

Maybe he was murdered by superstitious fans? Or the governent - they're usually to blame!

For being one of the world's most intelligent creatures, they sure don't get to live very long. It's kind of sad.

I watched a show on the discovery channel also about them and the moms die right after their babies start to hatch.
