Twitter is much faster, but on Facebook you can get more information about the people who are in your friends' circle. I think both are very good social platforms, you just need to be creative!

I remember someone smart (can't remember who, LOL) saying that the key to social media was creating a "conversation" rather than simply broadcasting whatever message you want people to hear about you. This is what makes it truly revolutionary as a marketing tool, because you can form higher level connection with your users, whereas with TV, Radio, Print, Google Ads, etc.. you are just talking at them without listening to their point of view.

My sense with my limited use of Twitter is that everyone is just shouting their talk points rather than having a conversation. I think Twitter's interface inherently promotes this kind of 1-way dialogue and as such will always be inferior as a social media tool than Facebook. It's great because it's convenient and you get the sense that you are getting your message out to a lot of people, but it will never be as good as Facebook for that higher-level interaction with your audience.

I definitely agree with you, Louis, that Twitter has the tendency to be very one-sided. I think it also has great potential if the resources exist to constantly monitor what is being said about your brand, to monitor trends in the industry, etc. Twitter essentially provides a free pass into the minds of consumers who 'tweet' everything from customer service complains to what they had for breakfast. If you are constantly on top of that communication, it can offer businesses opportunities to take cues from their customers and engage in two-way conversation.

Facebook is top dog , they are the world's most popular , interractive and fastest growing social network. It proved to be a real gold mine for igenuous people .

I used to have both, until I got fed up and erased both.

As most people already mentioned Twitter was very one-sided, ignorant if you'd like to call it, where everyone shouts something, promoting a service or whatever, without caring at all what everyone else has to offer. The traffic I was getting from Twitter was a large volume, but was highly not targeted and did not convert at all.

Facebook and Facebook fan pages seem to be the hype at the moment. I did find it useful for a while, but I just can't see what fuss is all about. A private company enters our life to the point that everything you hear is facebook this facebook that.

Pretty sure that sites can bring traffic without those two, but hey if it works for you there's no need to stop. It didn't for me, as it's not for a lot of people out there, but no one dares to quit, cause god forbid that's not what the rest are doing ( peer pressure ? )

I'm definitely a facebook fan. Not that much of value goes on on Twitter (in my opinion), facebook offers more tools for real interaction and pulling people in.

Depends on what you use both for I guess.
I mean, there's actually a wealth of amazingly clever people sharing unique and valuable research on Twitter (from scientists to lowly SEOers), and if you're interested in learning/networking/building yourself as a brand in the digital-world, then twitter is the place to be. I think Twitter is also clever and efficient tool to manage your professional online persona (as opposed to facebook - where professional and personal blurs together seemingly way too easily) and learn from your peers.

If you're interested in just using "social" for marketing, I guess now that you can log into facebook as your "page" rather than yourself It certainly has its pluses where twitter fails.. And of course G and bing are using "social signals" now.. so it would be folly to exclude either from your marketing strategies.. Use em both IMO!

In my opinion, I agree, both are very different. I use facebook for personal family and friends. I have not gone commercial with it yet. Twitter is all business for me. I do not think it will be much greater than it is now.

Twitter would be better than Facebook if you were a celebrity, or someone with a really exciting life It would be easier to post messages about what you are doing, and even easier for people to follow your movements and activities (as opposed to having to read your entire Facebook profile first).

For us mere mortals however, Facebook is much more detailed, user friendly, and better overall as a social media tool.

I have both, however I hate Twitter...I dont feel I can connect with my "followers" who 9/10 tend to be Affiliate Programs or other affiliates - Which isn't really what I am looking for..
With Facebook I find I get a lot more traffic to my sites and to my bog articles which is exactly what I want!
However - its amazing how much crap, porn and viruses are getting thrown around on Facebook too

While this is true part of a truly effective social marketing campaign must include several networking sites. I use Twitter, Facebook and Google Buzz. There are many many others but too many are not good either

I think Twitter is great for 1-way news items and Facebook is for interacting with people. As others mentioned in this thread, most Twitter followers are people active in the same industry, which are only interested in the follow-back and really don't care about your tweets. On Facebook you're dealing with real people and potential customers. Although the real profits from social media are hard to measure, Google likes social active sites, so I think it's worth the work in the end.

They are both useful in different ways as part of an overall marketing strategy. The ultimate goal is to achieve conversions and provide excellent customer support for a long term income stream, but Twitter and Facebook help to develop visibility for the business with a variety of information to numerous target audiences.

How effective the message is depends on many factors, but knowing what you want to say and who you want to say it to is critical.

I think it should be like this. Both are very different. I use facebook for personal family and friends. I haven't gone commercial with it yet. Twitter is all commercial for me. I don't think it's going to get much bigger than it is now. This is the main difference.

without a doubt twitter, who wants their gambling face in a book? well maybe we do, cause we make a living out of it. I wouldn't even follow a gambling site or brand even if they gave me loads of free bonuses..
and twitter is great for following fellow affiliates, you follow them, they follow you and voila you get more exposure. facebook needs something like this.

it depends on what aims you want to achieve. if you want to communicate faster with your friends/customers (you have a lot of useful updates, for example), use Twitter. If you need to provide your customers with full information, choose Facebook.
